Josh Spiker

Where did you grow up?
I was born and raised in Ventura.
What schools did you attend?
Ventura High School (Cougars)
Univerity of Wisconsin-Madison (Badgers)
When did you start running?
I started running when I was 6 years old with the Ventura Tigres.

What do you do outside of working at Future Track / Mile 26?
I also own Race Fox Events, we manage and own about 12 events a year and time another 50 or so races throughout Southern California.

What is your current favorite shoe and why?
Saucony Endorphin Speed. It has a springy and light ride with a plate that helps me run more efficiently (faster)... it's the most fun shoe I have ever run in.

What is a running goal you have right now?
My super competitive days are gone.  Right now I would like to get back to the point where I am consistently running 30 - 40 miles a week pain free. At some point I would like to do a 100-miler.

Why do you run?
It used to be strictly for competitive purposes...I wanted to see how fast I could go and everything was geared towards that. Now I simply love the feeling of running and enjoy the stress relief it provides.

Favorite pre-race meal?
Coffee. For whatever reason I do not like to eat anything before morning races.

Favorite Post-race meal?
I don't usually drink soda but after a long hard race I crave cold Coca Cola.

Advice for a new runner?
Be patient. Be consistent. Listen to your body. Running is a high impact and very repetitive sport and because of that injuries are somewhat common. You need to build up very slowly to allow your bones, tendons, muscles, and ligaments to adapt. It takes time. If you get hurt you can't train...

Favorite Professional Runner?
Haile Gebrselassie - Although retired he was a legend. He set 27 world records and just seemed like a very down to earth and genuinely nice person.

What is your favorite running event that you have completed?
The Hana Relay in Maui. This is a 6-person relay event that runs from Kahului to Hana. The road is 52 miles with lots of bridges and turns and Amazing views. It is a little chaotic because the road is narrow and most legs are around 3 miles so your team vehicle sometimes has a hard time getting to the next location before the next runner. Chaotic but in a very fun way.

Non-Running Hobbies?
Being with Jen, anything with dogs, Hiking, Going to the beach, and dreaming of launching a shoe company.
